'Fargo' - Coen Brothers

Fargo written, produced and directed by the Coen Brothers starring Frances McDormand; subverts the stereotypical conventional thriller as it is categorised under that genre.  A seven month pregnant police chief (Marge) seeks out to solve the cases of a series of homicides.  Unlike the stereotypical thriller; the plot of the film seems to move on slowly, with barely any tension or suspicion built to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.  The film presented many long irrelevant scenes such as Marge in bed with husband Norm; and eating breakfast before heading out to work- scenes that usually wouldn't be present in a conventional thriller.  The film came across almost comical- as the villains seem to be sarcastic in their manner and make regular visits to hotel rooms to attend to their sexual needs.

Rather than the film meeting expectations of a stereotypical film noir- Fargo seemed to present many juxtapositions that challenged the Thriller genre.  The heroine in the film instead of being the typical strong character was portrayed as a loving wife; the irony being emphasised by the fact that she is also pregnant.  The film lacked excitement or any suspense due to the fact that there was no eerie music, with long scenes that didn't actually benefit the plot and with limited action shots to bring the story to life.  The main setting is in snow; which opposes the idea of a 'dark and gloomy' setting of the conventional thriller, again lacking the thriller atmosphere.  The overall tone of the film pretty much seemed to be plain and boring; personally I wouldn't choose to watch this film.  But I believe that the Coen Brother's really challenged the idea of a conventional thriller- not living up to an audience's expectations about genre.
